This enchanting house is located on an island called Elliðaey near Vestmannaeyjar, a small archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. In 2000 the house was given to singer, Bjork from her motherland as a “Thank You” for putting Iceland on the international map.

Ofærufoss Eldgjá Iceland (by ystenes)
Eldgjá is the largest volcanic canyon in the world. Ofærufoss was once the most photographed waterfall in Iceland, due to a basalt bridge above the lower part of the falls, but it collapsed sometimes during the winter in 1993-1994.

iceland

gublersoup:

I’ve recently become obsessed with iceland
for a few reasons

1. it looks like this

2. their name

you’ve got to admire any country that while incredibly green and beautiful
wisely mis-named themselves “iceland” in order to keep invaders and jerks far away.

the idea was that when tough guys looked at a map and saw a place called Iceland they would be like, “a land filled with ice? lets not worry about conquering that place. it probably sucks anyway”
genius!

(*gubenote) I’ve heard this name thing may not actually be true. it might be some sort of urban legend.
either way this is what my 5th grade teacher taught me so I’m sticking with it.
mainly because its a great story.
if you want to know for sure i encourage you to investigate.

3. Necropants

they have a museum of witchcraft where i discovered this amazing new vocabulary word.  In iceland necropants were used for gaining money in advanced areas of sorcery. For someone to obtain the pants, they had to dig up a corpse that died from “natural causes,” and skin it below the waist and wear the corpse’s skin as pants. The owner of the Necropants had to “steal money from a poor widow and draw a magical symbol on a piece of parchment;” then the items were placed in a “pouch” within the pants. After this procedure was done, the owner of the Necropants “magically came into possession of money.

while there are other slightly easier ways to make money, you sort of have to
admire icelandic witches’ creativity.

3 cheers for iceland!
